The Cerne Abbas Giant chalk figure

Home to the Saxon chalk figure ‘The Rude Man of Cerne’ and built around a huge Benedictine abbey founded in AD 987, Cerne Abbas abounds with mediaeval history. Visit the remains of the Abbot's porch and guest house, the beautiful parish church built by the monks to serve the village, the Silver Well and of course, the 55m high Cerne Giant.

Before we move on to Sherborne, you have the option to visit beautiful Minterne Gardens. Landscaped in the manner of Capability Brown, Minterne boasts a world renowned and completely unique collection of Himalayan rhododendrons and azaleas, with spring bulbs, cherries, maples and many fine and rare trees.

Sherborne Abbey

On then to the beautiful market town of Sherborne where you can visit the abbey to see just how the abbey at Cerne would have looked and then either browse through the many independent shops or visit the two Sherborne Castles - the ruins of a C12th fortified bishop’s palace and the Tudor mansion built by Sir Walter Raleigh and set in gardens landscaped by Capability Brown.
